How do ball valves work?
Understanding how a ball valve works is very simple. It is usually designed with a large drilled hole that runs from one side to the other through the center. The ball fits snugly into the base inside the pipe opening (port). It is attached directly to the valve's operating handle, which is usually located above or to the side of the device, usually on the outside of the piping assembly. By turning the handle, usually a quarter turn to 90 degrees, the ball rotates about its axis within the port.
This action aligns the hole in the sphere with the direction of flow of the media in the pipe, allowing it to pass freely through the ball valve. This is referred to as the open or open position. Turning the handle back 90 degrees in the other direction, closed or off, rotates the ball so that the hole through it is perpendicular to the direction of flow. At this point, the medium can no longer pass through the ball valve and the flow is completely blocked.
Application of ball valves
Ball valves are most commonly found in piping systems and related applications such as industrial cooling. Their role is usually to help manage the flow rate of liquid or gas through a specific port or opening, thus affecting the pressure balance in other critical parts of the system.
They are also a common feature in various types of faucets and taps, and are widely used in gas lines, household appliances and other industrial applications. In most cases, industrial ball valves tend to be more durable and sturdier in construction than their domestic counterparts. They are typically used in applications where machines or systems operate at significantly higher pressures and temperatures in manufacturing, assembly and production, plastics and metals, chemical, medical, industrial power, food and beverage, printing and textile, electronics, automotive, and logistics.
